The Office of Digital Humanities provides four physical spaces in the JFSB that are available to students, faculty, and staff: the Humanities Learning Commons, the testing lab, the computer lab, and the Foreign Language Activities Commons (FLAC). We encourage the use of these spaces within the college.
If you walk past the Humanities Learning Commons (1141 JFSB), you might see students studying, class gatherings, or perhaps even a game of ping pong. It’s a popular student hub with comfortable chairs, outlets, white boards, and five reservable study rooms. It’s also the venue for Y Play Games, a weekly lecture series on video games, which you may have read about recently in BYU News, KSL, The Daily Universe, or the College of Humanities News. Each Monday afternoon, come hear a 15-20 minute lecture on the “game of the week,” which will be available to play for the whole week. Professors Brian Croxall and Michael Call began the series during the Fall 2024 semester, which included games like Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild, ET, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater. The series will return to the Humanities Learning Commons in January with the start of the winter semester.
The testing lab (B153 JFSB) is a favorite for faculty who administer computer-based assessments. It’s a proctored computer lab where students can take quizzes or exams with the benefit of reserving a time slot in advance. Instructors will find that the testing lab is more flexible than other testing spaces, especially when trying to meet deadlines for submitting exam materials to the lab. The testing lab can currently accommodate up to 97 students at a time, and testing times can be reserved one of the following ways:
- Instructors schedule the range of dates that an exam will be open. Students may take their test during this time by reserving a time online at https://signups.byu.edu/ or walking in.
- Instructors schedule a block of time for the entire class to take the exam. To do this, contact Russell Hansen at 801-422-9295.
For students who need access to Photoshop, InDesign, or other software, the lab at 1131 JFSB has computers available with the Adobe suite and other products.
The Foreign Language Activities Commons (B003 JFSB) is located near the Education in Zion auditorium. It’s a space with two main areas. When you first walk into the FLAC, you’ll see room to stand or sit and chat, which is why many departments host receptions here. If you head to the back room, you’ll see a multipurpose space that can provides a relaxed environment for club meetings, classes, and more.

These valuable spaces provide the foundation of learning, community, and belonging for which we strive on campus. We are so grateful for Russell Hansen, the director of labs and learning spaces, and his team of 30 students who make it all possible.
